Holistic dentistry is a comprehensive approach of examining oral health and understanding how it is connected to overall health. A holistic dentist is trained to pay attention to how all the parts of your mouth and airway are interconnected and relate to the body’s natural functions of eating, speaking, breathing and sleep. Holistic dentists focus on treatments that are biocompatible (least-toxic), minimally invasive and often work together with other healthcare professionals to ensure that your overall health is protected and optimized.

I see holistic dentistry as an evolution of traditional dental care. Most of the services that you can expect to get are very similar to a traditional dental office, such as fillings and crowns, regular teeth cleanings, and gum disease treatment. It’s the perspective that dental health is closely tied to the whole body’s health and wellness that helps to differentiate traditional from holistic dentistry. This evolution that is driven by scientific research has resulted in development of techniques and practices that help to support the body’s normal physiology.

At Bloom Holistic Dentistry, we utilize additional unique methods of treatment including nutritional therapies, orthodontics to open the airways, ozone therapy and mercury removal, all with the goal of supporting the body’s natural physiology.

Another aspect of holistic dentistry is that we look beyond teeth and gums and focus on treating underlying causes of disease by evaluating lifestyle factors, nutritional deficiencies, and airway/breathing issues. Holistic dentistry regards the best way to improve dental health is through preventative dental care and supporting the oral microbiome, ultimately improving the whole body’s microbiome.

We never use metals or mercury in dentistry due to long term toxicity concerns. In fact, most countries in Europe have already phased out the use of mercury in dentistry due to growing concerns and the increase of research in the field.. When removing either of those, we use a very specific protocol called SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) that protects us and the patient by minimizing exposure to mercury fumes during the procedure.

With current breakthroughs in dental research, and new methods of screening for dental health, we now find ourselves in a place where we can now offer even more opportunities to help patients in their health and wellness journey. Taking a holistic approach to dentistry gives us the opportunity to apply modern science and technology into your overall dental care.
